Since the late 1950s, the Rural Electric Cooperative (REC) Youth Tour has brought high school juniors and seniors to Washington, D.C. for an all-expense paid tour of the city. Students on the tour learn first-hand what it is like to be involved in politics, community development and today’s social issues. They participate in National Youth Day, visit with their representative and senators and explore the sights around the nation's capital.
Students are selected for this program by their local electric cooperative. Usually the selection process takes the form of an essay contest, personal interviews or a speech contest. The selection process is different for each cooperative.
This year Butler County REC will sponsor Whitney Boedeker for the June 11-17, 2010, Youth Tour. Boedeker is the daughter of Butler County REC members Randy and Kay Boedeker of Lawler. She is a junior at Turkey Valley High School in Jackson Junction.
Boedeker will join 40 other students from Iowa, along with more than 1,000 students from across America, to explore our nation’s capital in June.
From the nine high school juniors who applied for the all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., Boedeker and two additional students, Jordan Rieckenberg from Waverly and Chelsey Wedeking from Plainfield, were selected to receive $500 scholarships upon entry into an accredited college.
The goal of the youth tour and scholarship programs at Butler County REC is to support education and to provide opportunities for youth in rural Iowa.
