Attend Build It Right 2009

Education

Paying attention to energy-efficiency details is more important than ever when building or remodeling a house.

Area Touchstone Energy Cooperatives and the Iowa Central Community College Green Building Institute are sponsoring several energy-efficient building workshops this fall.

The full-day classes will be held Nov. 23 (Monday) and Dec. 5 (Saturday) in the new Bioscience and Health Sciences building and the Carpentry Shop at Iowa Central Community College (ICCC), Fort Dodge. You can pick either workshop. Registration is free. If needed, a third session may be held Saturday, Dec. 12. Check in advance with your electric cooperative to see if the Dec. 12 date will be offered.

The workshops will focus on:

  • Decisions you make when building or remodeling a home, including energy-efficient construction materials, technologies and building techniques
  • Energy efficiency and personal energy choices
  • Energy Star heating, cooling, lighting and appliances
  • Landscaping
  • Recycling
  • Touchstone Energy Home standards
  • ICCC Green Building Institute

New this year is that part of the day’s learning will be held in the new Bioscience and Health Sciences building, a state of the art building constructed using the highest energy efficiency standards. However, check in first at the Career Education Building (Carpentry Shop); we'll have refreshments and exhibits available there before moving across the street to the auditorium in the Bioscience and Health Sciences building for the sessions. “Many people use terms like ‘green’ and ‘sustainable’ these days,” says Jim Sayers, Corn Belt Power Cooperative. “At this workshop, we’ll offer practical ideas on building efficiently - to save money, natural resources and energy. Using energy-efficient building techniques also increases the comfort level of your home and makes it last longer. The workshop can help whether you are building, remodeling or just trying to determine which updates may make your home more energy efficient.”

Workshop leader will be Bill McAnally, energy-efficient building expert and chair of ICCC’s Industrial Technology Department. Also helping will be area vendors and representatives from your Touchstone Energy Cooperative.

This is the eighth year area Touchstone Energy Cooperatives have sponsored fall workshops as part of its focus on energy-efficient construction.

Workshops are hands-on and will run from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Morning refreshments begin at 8:30 a.m. and a noon meal is included. Pre-registration is encouraged so meal plans can be made.
